Interview with EarthHero: A New Online Marketplace That Makes it Easy to Find Sustainable Products
Finding natural products can sometimes be challenging. While there are finally more options, it can be hard to find one website to locate pretty much everything you need. Enter EarthHero, a new online marketplace where you can find carefully-selected products from trusted companies with a focus on sustainability. Founded by entrepreneur and nature enthusiast Ryan Lewis, a serial entrepreneur and innovator, who, along with his team, researched brands from across a huge variety of categories, from innovative household goods to clothing to audio electronics to beauty products. Their sustainable practices and brand partnerships don’t stop with the product line either. They are also doing their part to offset all emissions caused from transporting their products as well as from day-to-day operations, by supporting reforestation projects in the United States through their partnership with Carbonfund.org. In 2017 alone, EarthHero offset the equivalent of roughly 34 acres of forest, making EarthHero a carbon-neutral company that helps local ecosystems across the US.
Currently, this includes over 1,000 products across 60 brands, such as some of the products we recently had the opportunity to test out like Bee’s Wrap, eco-eggs for Easter, and the kids bamboo utensils forks and spoons kit. We loved how easy it was find everyday products, which are organized in a variety of categories, such as household goods, baby products, clothing, beauty products, and more. One of our favorites was the Bee’s Wrap, a reusable beeswax paper line that allows you to use the warmth of your hands to mold and then wrap anything from fruit to sandwiches to cheese and more. When you’re done, you simply wash it, let it dry and use it all over again. How cool is that?!
On the site, you’ll find a breakdown of the product, plus its sustainability features, materials used, packaging, certifications and more. We love how EarthHero breaks this down in a clear and understandable way to empower the consumer as they make their decision.
Additionally, EarthHero is a member of 1% For The Planet where they donate 1% of their sales annually towards sustainability initiatives that give back to the planet, and they are currently in the application process of becoming a B-certified corporation. EarthHero also rewards their community for their sustainable shopping via a EarthHero Rewards system where each person receives points for every purchase, as well as for product reviews and social media shares. Twice a year, each person’s points are collected, where the consumer will receive discounts and coupon rewards based on how many points they’ve accumulated.
To learn more about EarthHero, we had the opportunity to chat with Ryan about how the idea came about, the research process and how their making it easier to shop for the best sustainable products online.
Interview with Ryan Lewis of EarthHero
Wellness Patterns: How did the idea of EarthHero come about?
Ryan Lewis: My ah-ha moment came on a trail run. That’s my happy space and what I do most days of the week when not with my family or at the office. However, it really was a culmination of a deep desire to wanting be part of the solution. I couldn’t keep hearing study after study tell us we need to change the way we consume, and then not be a part of helping to solve it. And so I began. I began to research all sorts of product categories for myself and my family to see what assortment of healthy and sustainable products were out there from apparel to home supplies, personal care, etc. Just about everywhere I looked had incredible people making products that were good for people AND with respect to Mother Nature. The problem was how difficult it was to find them, trust them, and understand the impact they had. So EarthHero was born, to make all of these challenges much easier.
Wellness Patterns: How do you find the brands that you feature on the website?
Ryan Lewis: We try to find everything out there that meets our guidelines. It’s our goal to have a great option available every time people want or need something. We are achieving this by utilizing several tactics. Every time we onboard a new brand, we ask them who they’d recommend. Because they just went through the process, their suggestions tend to be a great fit and there is a great community of suppliers committed to making products the right way. They are such a supportive and collaborative group of people. We also get great feedback from our customers. We love to reach out to suppliers on our customers recommendations! In addition we attend many trade shows annually and are constantly online looking for the next pioneering company!

Wellness Patterns: Tell us about the research that’s involved.
Ryan Lewis: At the product and brand level we look primarily at 4 areas.
– Material make up – The product has to be as close to 100% sustainable in its material make up as possible.
– Labor practices – We look for fair labor certifications and processes.
– Packaging – Packaging needs to be as close to 100% compostable, recyclable or made from recycled content.
– Give back programs – We always look for any programs, non-profits, or charitable commitments from our brand partners.
– There are inevitably many other reasons as well which we communicate on the product and brand pages as well.
Wellness Patterns: What are some of your criteria for featuring a brand?
Ryan Lewis: In addition to the information above, we look for a shared ethos of genuine care. A lot of times they belong to organizations like B-Corp, 1 percent for the planet, and have a give back program. Some are zero-waste or carbon free companies. Some are actually regenerative, meaning the more they grow, the more healing they provide to the planet. How cool is that!?
Wellness Patterns: What can a consumer expect to find on the site?
Ryan Lewis: Community – People that care about what’s going on just as much as they do. Also, we offer a lot of education, but in fun, bite sized portions. And yes, a lot of great every day household goods to beauty products, apparel to outdoor products, gifts and more.
Wellness Patterns: What are some of your favorite/go-to products?
Ryan Lewis: Bees Wrap, I’m a sucker for packing a sandwich for the office. Using these wraps made from all natural ingredients, and reusable for one year help reduce waste. And then when they have expired they are compostable! I also love my Klean Kanteen reusable bottle and my favorite hoodie is from tentree. It’s made of recycled poly and organic cotton. Every time you buy a tentree product, they plant 10 traceable trees.
Wellness Patterns: Anything else to add?
Ryan Lewis: We’re young and just getting started. Our mission to is make sustainable shopping so easy, everyone does it. To get there we need to offer a zero compromise experience. We aim to make it just as easy or easier, convenient and affordable to shop this way, as the way most people shop today.
