Dr. Smood: Healthy Boutique Cafe Popping Up in NYC

Dr. Smood: Healthy Boutique Cafe

With the focus on health and well-bring becoming increasingly mainstream, the options to purchase organic food and drinks have far surpassed the options solely found in your local health food store. Restaurants and even cafes are ‘getting it,’ offering health-conscious consumers tons of nutrient-rich options to feed their mind, body and souls. During a recent press preview, I had the opportunity to check out such a cafe when I attended the opening of the Lexington Avenue location of Dr. Smood, an organic boutique café that features food and drink items to benefit your mood.  With four locations currently open in New York (a fifth is coming in the fall), the cafés focus on offering nutrient-rich super foods and beverages to the health-conscious consumer. This includes convenient grab-and-go options, a full coffee and juice bar, organic food options, and a “Smood Market” filled with dry goods and supplements.

Awesome, right?!

This includes backing by scientists, nutritionists and doctors who spent three years developing the nutrient-rich foods to enhance performance of the body, mind and soul. Each product is color-coded and tailored to boost one of six categories: Immunity, Energy, Health, Beauty, Detox and Power. All of the food and drinks are USDA-certified organic, kosher and are made without GMOs, preservatives, dairy, chemicals, HPP, pesticides or refined sugar.

Menu items include organic coffees and teas, green juices, cold pressed juices that are targeted by your mood, organic pastries, power sandwiches made from Performance Bread—which helps to stabilize blood sugar—and salads loaded with bio-available protein and organic super foods. Another unique aspect of Dr. Smood’s is that nutritionists and Smood Operators are available on-site to help customers choose products that are tailored to their needs and that will boost their health. A latte with health benefits? Now, that’s something we can totally get behind.

Dr. Smood locations in New York include 40th and Madison, NoMad, SoHo, 46th and Lexington and the Lower East Side. First launched in Miami, where there are currently five locations, Dr. Smood will continue to open new locations in 2017 and beyond with international expansion plans underway.

Boxed Water’s Social Reforestation Campaign

Boxed Water's Social Reforestation Campaign #ReTree
As I’ve mentioned, I love to support companies that do their part to give back. Whether big or small, these incentives allow consumer to better understand bigger issues and how they can impact us all. One such company that is doing their part-both as a brand and through the partners the support-is Boxed Water. With a motto “Boxed Water is Better,” Boxed Water was created with a simple mission to offer an alternative to plastic drinking water, making a product that is more environmentally-friendly. Essentially just water and a box, Boxed Water is 100% recyclable, shipped flat to help reduce offset the carbon footprint, and made with a minimal design (no excessive paper). And what about the water itself? It’s made with an 8-step purification process to ensure that it’s free of impurities and minerals and that the pH levels are very close to neutral.

During a recent event in NYC, I not only had the opportunity to try out the water (it’s good!) but to also learn more about the company and their partnership with the National Forest Foundation and their #ReTree social reforestation campaign.  Through this social media incentive, they are working to protect the planet by planting one million trees within the next five years. And we can all participate! Simply post on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter featuring Boxed Water using the hashtag #ReTree and Boxed Water will plant two trees. You can also subscribe to their newsletter where they will plant two trees on your behalf or purchase online and they will plant six trees. How easy is that?!

Running the Brooklyn Half (or How I Pretended to be Brave!)

A few weeks ago I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon, a race I never thought that I would ever do. And yet I did and had an incredible experience facing something that I thought was out of my reach. But it didn’t happen overnight. Over the years I’ve gotten more into a running, slowing building up my speed–both hating and loving it with every new accomplishment. Something that seemed so impossible was slowly starting not to feel so, and as a full-time working mama with three kids, I found that it gave me with this newfound mental release that provided me with something that was just for me.

Brooklyn Half Marathon the beginning
The start of the madness.

So I’ve been running more, pushing myself even further to do more 5Ks and even Half Marathon with Shape earlier this year. And then the Brooklyn Half. I was really excited for this one since it was a race through my hometown, doing something so different, so challenging, and yet so exhilarating! It also meant that I had to brave, strong and confident: a mantra that I profess on the daily to my own girls.

brooklyn half marathon

The day of the race was thrilling! I woke at 5am, made coffee and ventured to the Brooklyn Museum where a collection of other eager runners were waiting. It was freezing out but I tried not to think about the cold as I waited for the 7:45am start time. Once we were signaled to go, it was incredible to see all of the bodies in motion as we swopped around Grand Army Plaza, through Prospect Park, down Ocean Parkway and finally on the boardwalk of Coney Island. While the cooler temps made for the perfect run, it still was very hard, grueling and mental to get through There were times when I wanted to stop, take a break, but I didn’t. I had to push and be strong for myself. And what I did realize as I looked at the Brooklyn that I once lived in, is that running is hard and the people participating are all sorts of runners: some might love it, some might hate, or maybe some are like me and they have found something that challenges them and pushes them outside of their comfort zone. Or maybe they want to show their kids or family or themselves that they are strong, brave, and can do hard things. Because we can.

That was the only person that I was running for and against, and in the end the only person that I wanted to beat as I mentally challenged myself through the run to try to run under two hours. That didn’t happen for this race but I did reach 2:09 as I crossed the finish line at Coney feeling relieved, stronger and no longer having to pretend.

Get involved by running with NYRR. They have so many great mini runs, and of course, the big marathon coming up! http://www.nyrr.org/

First Ever Vegan Tri-State VegFest and an Interview with the Founder!

tri-state vegfest comes to the NY area

We just learned about an incredible vegan event coming to the NYC area with the first-ever Tri-State VegFest! Held at the New Jersey Convention & Exposition Center on Saturday June 17, 2017 from 12-6PM, the Tri-State VegFest is an entirely vegan festival that showcases plant-based cuisine and cruelty-free products that are part of a vegan lifestyle. This festival is all about food, community and entertainment and attendees will have the opportunity to experience over 100 national and local exhibitors.

tri-state vegfest

tri-state vegfest

Presented by Experience Expos, a multifaceted empowerment company founded by South Florida-based entrepreneur Kyle Michaud, there will literally be something for everybody at Tri-State VegFest including the best health-conscious food and beverages, children’s activities, happy hour wine sampling, live music, cooking demos and much more. The event will also be presented in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere where guests do not have to worry about asking about where food is from, as it’s a guarantee that everything is ethical and 100% vegan.

VegFest is a celebration of the health, environmental, and animal welfare benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. There will be vegan food to sample and purchase, engaging speakers, exciting performers, and members from the local vegan community to answer questions and showcase what inspires them. As a participant, volunteer, or attendee, your presence assists us to achieve our mission in educating as many families and individuals as possible about the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle.

National and local vendors participating at the Tri-State VegFest include:

• Harmless Harvest – Coconut water and organic tea
• Suja Juice – offers a variety of cold-pressed organic juices packed with fruits and vegetables.
• Daiya – give you the delicious joy of dairy, without any compromise.

• Macro Vegitarian – carefully crafted vegan meals for people who are tired of boring choices such as grilled vegetables and cardboard veggie burgers.
• Vegetarian Society of New Jersey
• And others

And to learn even more about the Tri-State VegFest, we had the honor to speak with founder, Kyle Michaud to learn more about how it started and what you can expect.

Kyle Michaud: founder of tri-state veg fest

Wellness Patterns: How did the idea for the Tri-State VegFest come about?

Kyle Michaud: The Tri-State VegFest was born out of my love for food, and animals. The cruelty-free festival allows attendees to explore 100+ vendors that have made a commitment to being vegan. Unlike other events we welcome vegans and vegan wannabes to come explore the delicious and nutritionally dense entrees that are being served up!

Wellness Patterns: What about for families?

Kyle Michaud: We encourage families to attend, and we offer FREE admission to children under 12. In addition to food and education, the festival features booths promising to engage and entertain people of all ages and backgrounds.

Wellness Patterns: How did you get into wellness?

Kyle Michaud: I started a cold-pressed juice company in 2014 and soon discovered that reaching ‘green consumers’ was more difficult then I had anticipated! I become motivated to connect eco-conscious consumers with green products and services. The festival was born!

Wellness Patterns: What are your goals for the Tri-State VegFest?

Kyle Michaud: My goal in 2017 is to become the largest event of it’s kind, promoting a plant-based lifestyle to as many people as possible. We are aiming to attract over 12,000 attendees to come explore what everyone is talking about!
